Just off the Eastern Cape of South Africa, there is apparently a huge whale leaping experience just waiting to be had by tourists and locals.
Now, naturally, whales are seafaring animals that don`t live on land or in the air, but sometimes they might just feel like flying for a bit! That`s exactly what this absolutely huge 40 ton humpback whale does as it jumps out of the water, waves its enormous tail around and then drops back in, creating a huge splash. Craig Capehart caught these magnificent animals on camera and he got so much more than one whale – he recorded a mother humpback with her calf as they were going to the surface to eject some water out of their blowholes and take a deep breath before going under again.
It`s hard to catch anything on camera in winter, but Mr. Capehart was lucky enough to get a really clear shot because of the rare weather just off the coast of Mbotyi, South Africa. He also caught a few shots of a whale leaping straight up and then falling on his back, with his tail in the water the entire time.
Also, he caught a whale swimming on his back, with his belly up to the surface and flapping both of his fins, obviously having lots of fun while doing it.
Sometimes, these huge mammals will jump out of the water and spin as they fall back in, so that they don`t fall on their blowhole.
Now, while this looks impressive, and it is, it`s still very dangerous to film them from this distance – they are, after all, huge animals who weigh tens of tons and the splash alone could hurt you or knock you overboard.
