Formula 1 racing cars are one of the most sophisticated machines on earth. This championship is the most technically advanced and competitive form of racing. To have some kind of an idea of how complicated the sport`s technology is now, we have an awesome video made by Donut Media. It`s a video about the evolution of the Formula 1 wheel. It shows the evolution from a regular aluminum and wood steering wheel to today`s lightweight, squared-off wheel which looks like the controls of the Saturn V rocket. However, Formula 1 wheels didn`t evolve much from the 50`s to the 80`s.
It was not until the late 1980`s and the beginning of semi-automatic transmission and active suspension that the Formula 1 wheel design, began to look like the today`s wheel. However, even then, a whole decade passed before knobs and buttons became ubiquitous. Donut Media borrowed this impressive collection from the Racing Hall of Fame. They have them all here, like a wheel from 1957 to a modern 2014 wheel. Most of these steering wheels are signed by the racing drivers who operated them. You have wheels from legends like James Hunt and Michael Schumacher. Check out the video below, and enjoy the awesome technological advancement in Formula 1.
