We have all heard of sonic booms, we are all fascinated by them and often want to witness them. But there is always that question that bothers us all – How to they emerge? What makes the boom, is it just the super sonic flight? But what about it. Yup, listen carefully, we are getting down to it! As you probably already know, an airplane produces waves when traveling through air. So, if the plane in stake travels slower than the speed of sound, then the sound waves are able to propagate ahead of the aircraft.
Now, the SONIC BOOM is produced when the airplane is travelling fast enough to break the sound barrier, or in other words, flies faster than the speed of sound! Super sonic flight is the best for these occasions! The footage below captures F 14 jets as well as the so called Blue Angels F 18 and the SR 71 all creating sonic booms during this super sonic flight. Moreover, you will be able to see the Atlas Rocket which is SO COOL to watch. We love those sounds, we love sonic booms and we love science – must check this out!
