We all know who Steven Hinton is – he`s a legend in aviation circles and he`s won more awards than most people ever dream of. However, this time, it wasn`t him that did something really special – it was his son and namesake. Getting in his P-51 Mustang “Voodoo”, Mr. Hinton Jr. decided to break the world record for propeller driven and piston-engined aircraft with a record speed of 531.53 miles per hour! That is incredibly fast, even for an airplane of this caliber!
If you`ve ever gone a hundred miles an hour, this is literally over five times as fast as that, and this guy did it without blinking. I bet his father is really proud of him now, but this is all the accomplishment of Hinton Jr.
This video was filmed by Pursuit Aviation with their custom Shotover F1 system which has been engineered to film things going faster than 350 knots, and boy did they do a great job. Steven Hinton Junior`s speed record is now immortalized in the book of records, and his P-51 Mustang as well. I really like how the Mustang is redesigned here, with a fully white exterior. However, this machine is now the fastest aircraft ever to take off while having a weight between three and six thousand kilograms, which is the record category. I look forward to seeing some more of Steve Hinton Jr. and his demolishing of records. It appears as he has the same knack for flying as his father and he seems very promising for the future. Great job!
