Have you ever wondered what happens to all airplanes that are no longer in use? Every single airplane gets recycled and turned into circuit boards for use in phones, computers, TV`s and much more. But how do they do it? The planes end up in an airplane junkyard near Tucson, Arizona. You can find everything there from F4 Phantoms to B52 where they get resurrected into something new. But before they start the airplane recycling, every part from the inside is salvaged hence there are miles of wiring, tons of metal and thousands of electrical components.
In the next process, hence the plane is too big for recycling, they shred the body into smaller pieces with a powerful machine used in construction. Once that has been done, the parts can then be transported into the junkyard where they shred the plane even further down until you can`t recognize it. But it does not end there. The chunks are placed in the so called “Hammer Head Mill” which is the heart and soul of the whole process. Steel spikes mash up the metal so the final thing to do is to sort it out into several different categories. Check the video and see more of the airplane recycling process!
