It`s a pretty common problem: You are going to Le Mans with your brand new 400HP engine and you find out that is just too big for the plane`s overhead compartment. Well, it looks like Nissan has the perfect answer for this traveler`s conundrum. The answer lies in their ultralight Zeod RC engine. It`s a DIG-TR, 1.5L, three cylinder engine that produces 400HP and weighs only 88 pounds. The engine is 19.68 inch tall x 15.74 in long and 7.79 in wide. However, it delivers tremendous power at 298Kw and 280 ft-lb of torque. The power-to-weight ratio this engine boasts can make a Formula 1 racer envious as well.
The Zeod RC Engine is a perfect example of how an engine should be reduced in size while increasing efficiency. This is also a part of an endeavor to build a more effective electric/petrol hybrid engine that will have the ability to switch on and off on demand. Both the electric and petrol parts go through one five-speed gearbox. With this engine, Nissan became the pioneers of three-cylinder engines in major motorsport competitions. This technology is expected to be implemented in the future Nissan road cars as well. Check out the video below and tell us what you think.
