Ford is one of the most iconic car manufacturers in the United States. They are responsible for making one of the best muscle cars in history, the Ford Mustang. There have been many variations of this remarkable car, but today we will focus on one variation that many people don`t know it existed. We are talking about a mid-engine Ford Mustang that was built way back in 1969. This was an experiment by the Ford Motor Co. and it was a mid-engine version of their Boss 429 Mustang. It was dubbed as LID (Low Investment Drivetrain) and the goal was to manufacture this mid-engine configuration cheaply.
Only 1358 examples were built of the Boss 429 Mustang and it was known to have a lot of issues. Most notably, it had poor weight distribution because of the big V8 engine being placed on the front wheels of its light wheelbase chassis. In the mid-engine Ford Mustang, the engine was relocated to the back, above the rear wheels. However, much to the engineer`s dismay, redistributing the weight to the back didn`t improve the performance of the car. Because of this, this project was stopped and this car was never mass produced. Who knows though, maybe one day they will revive this idea, just like they brought back the Ford Bronco.
