Modern cars, even the older ones, are built with ultimate precision. Some parts are more complex to understand how they work, some are straight forward. Each part plays a vital role. But have you ever questioned yourself what could possibly be inside a torque converter and how does it actually work? In the following video you get the answer, be sure to check it out. Namely the converter is placed on a lathe. With the help of a cutting tool, slowly and carefully it is opened. Because of the high speed and the hard metal, it immediately starts smoking hence a lot of heat is generated.
Then the guy taps the torque converter with a hammer until it finally cracks. He takes it onto a table and takes it fully apart. Under the impeller there is the stator with one way roller spring held by the Torrington bearing. The biggest part inside is the turbine with its welded hub. There is also the clutch assembly and finally the front cover which is welded together to the impeller. This ingeniously designed part looks rather complex, but once is taken apart there is nothing much to it. So there is the answer to your question.
