It was about time! The British company Tarmac has found the number one solution to reduce the flood risk around the World. It is about their latest product, the TopMix Permeable surface – a special mixture that can be used instead of conventional concrete in order to prevent flooding in populated areas. This ingenious invention, the thirsty concrete for surface and storm water management can easily make a revolution in the methods that affected areas use to fight against floods which were quite frequent in the last decade. According to the official statistics, over two thirds of homes affected by the 2007 floods were flooded by water running off pavements or overflowing from drainage systems.
The secret behind this magic still remains, but whatever it is, the video below is a sufficient proof that TopMix Permeable can absorb a whopping 4,000 liters of water in a minute and it can perfectly replace the classical concrete. In other words, the average permeability rate is 600 liters, per minute, per m2. In addition, the thirsty concrete can drain and filter the liquid pollutants on the road such as motor oil residue. However, this unique concrete lacks the ability to handle intense traffic and heavy vehicle loads in comparison with the traditional paving materials.
