Can a Bicycle Wheel Support The Weight of a CAR?

We have shared a lot of interesting videos where people put all kinds of parts on their cars. This video however, is slightly different, mainly because the part that is installed is not even made for a car! Bill Mould is a bike mechanic, a wheel builder and a wheel engineer, and he decided to try and build a big bicycle wheel that will be strong enough to support the weight of a car! He shows us the 36 spoke bicycle wheel he made in order to see if it can support the full weight of the car.

It was made with a velocity hub, velocity rim, a velocity cliffhanger rim and a Maxxis tire. All of this is held together with the 36 spokes of the wheel. Even though the wheel spins nicely and would be phenomenal on a bicycle, it is actually meant to be attached on a car!

Attaching the big bicycle wheel onto a car was a problem for which Bill Mould had to find a solution. Moreover, he had to figure out a way how to have a stronger axle for the wheel. He shows the size of the wheel hub, and it can clearly be seen that it is too big for the bicycle wheel. Bill mentions that he will need some kind of adapter in order to attach the big bicycle wheel to the hub. With the help of a student, this adapter was made and the bicycle wheel was attached to a Toyota Corolla.

The whole wheel attaching process is shown and explained as well. With the big bicycle wheel finally attached on the car, it is time to test if it can support the full weight of the car! Will this experiment be successful? You know what to do if you want to find out! Enjoy!
