All vehicles in general are being upgraded with new and better technology each year. But many of the crucial concepts of how a car should work have stayed the same even today. Such is the case with this amazing mechanism, simply called a differential. In this video recorded many decades ago, the concept of how a differential works is explained in details. The problem arose when the rear two wheels had to turn at a different speed while turning, so they had to come up with a solution. Though a differential looks fairly complicated, once you get to know the concept it will become much clearer.
Namely, in a demonstration, two wheels are mounted on separate axel which allows them to revolve freely at different speed. Two spokes are added at the axels and a bar is fixed which moves the spokes but at the same speed. This problem had a simple solution; the bar was put on a pivot so that it can swing in either direction. They faced another problem of having too much gaps between the spokes so they had to add more spokes. And the basic differential was born!
