Until the end of the 1970s muscle cars and their performance were not longer what they used to be. Expensive gas and even more expensive insurance caused a lot of problems to muscle car producers, but the 1979 Pontiac Firebird managed to survive!
However, this was not the case with Pontiac. Unlike other car producers, Pontiac did not reduce the horsepower of the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, but on the contrary, it increased it from 200 to 220. This vehicle, that featured in the movie entitled Smokey and the Bandit had a new package, the WS6, incorporated in it that included new tires and new wheels, modified suspension and better steering. All these changes made the Trans-Am faster than the Chevy Corvette.
Did you know? The roof option became available in 1976 and the roof was made by Hurst. But the roof leaked and therefore Pontiac decided to make the roof by itself.
