Koenigsegg DIRECT DRIVE SYSTEM -- A CAR WITHOUT GEARBOX!
When the Koenigsegg Regera was unveiled it managed to take the hypercar world by storm. Despite being a 1500HP hybrid monster, it also has another very powerful asset. All of that power is not going through a gearbox, but through a system called the Koenigsegg Direct Drive! In this one, you will learn everything about the Regera`s magnificent Direct Drive System.
In an episode called Inside Koenigsegg, Christian Von Koenigsegg explains very thoroughly how exactly the Regera is able to reach staggering 248mph without the need of a gearbox. This is really a concept that many gearheads found it hard to understand.
However, how does it work? Behind the twin-turbo V8 engine, there is a 160kw motor which is also a starter for the engine. That`s hooked up to the crankshaft and then the engine sends its power through a hydraulic coupling.
This sounds very similar to a locking torque converter as it does have the ability to lock up. Power is then sent to the 2.85:1 rear differential. With the Direct Drive System, Koenigsegg really managed to establish itself as one of the leaders in the hypercar industry.
